Yellow Magic Orchestra "Rydeen 79/07" (Download)

Yellow Magic OrchestraYMO fans rejoice! The band is back together, at least for the time of a song, and a beer commercial.

After reuniting Sadistic Mica Band last year, Kirin Lager did another tour de force by bringing back together all three original members of Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band recorded a new version of the hit song "Rydeen", retitled "Rydeen 79/07", which is being used in the TV commercial starting today. The song will be available for download from February 3 on iTunes Music Store Japan and others, and there are no plans yet for a CD release.

Thanks for that great info! Hopefully the song will find it's some day to some CD for all fans outside Japan.

I agree, such a shame that this remake won't come out on another format. Generally when remakes come out, they are generally crap. This really is not the case. They really reworked "Rydeen" into a nice modern classic. However, one cannot forget the nostalgia of the lo-fi synths of yesteryear.

I'd guess it will probably end up being released on CD somehow before long. Lately some labels seem to try to sell music twice by releasing first as a download and only announcing a CD release later.

Last year Sadistic Mika[ela] Band released a new version of "Time Machine ni onegai" the same way, first as a download and later also on CD (part of the new album "Narkissos").

Just got Rydeen 79/07.. don't go to HMV Japan for it as their download site is corrupted - I didn't realize I could swear so well in Japanese..

OnGen is very easy to register on though and you can find the link through the official Rydeen site.

A short review..?

I would say this track owes more to Sakamoto's style on 'Chasm' and the accompaniment on 'Merry Christmas..' than anything.

I like it but, as has been said, the Takahashi original is beyond comparison.. I have always loved the end section, where they drop the bass line and the keyboard soar to anthemic levels, so I was a little disappointed that the end of this new version doesn't have that 'power'.

Ah well, YMO & Sakamoto could probably sample farts for a track and I'd still buy it.

In any case, it's great to see them back - check out all the posts of the advert, plus the making of, on www.youtube.com
