Legendary neo-GS band The Phantom Gift (Twitter), which was very popular when it started in the 80s, came back recently with three original members —bassist Sally Kubota, guitarist Napoleon Yamagishi and drummer Charlie Morita— joined by new singer Lui Sugimura (aka Lui Bluesface) (also of The Tokyo Locals, ex-The Hair, ex-Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra). This first new recording consists of two covers: The Dynamites' "manatsu no yoru no dōbutsuen" (1968) and The Tempters' "Tell Me More" (1969). The jacket uses an illustration from 1968 by the singer's father, Atsushi Sugimura.
The Phantom Gift has been performing live several times lately. Their latest show can be watched online for a fee via Zaiko, until Saturday July 15 at 23:59 (JST). Also look out for upcoming news on their official Twitter account.
