Record Day 2020

Record Day 2020, ran by Japan's long-running record factory Tōyōkasei, is just about to happen this November 3rd. Being on the same day as Japan's "Culture Day", it's a day off well spent doing record shopping. Record Day items are available in stores and online from that date.

Below is a list of records that Tokyo's Coolest Sound readers should not want to miss, but there's a lot more to find in the full list, including city pop re-issues and more.

Sally Kubota Group "Do You Believe in Magic?" (7"+Download code)
サリー久保田グループ「魔法を信じる？ (Do You Believe in Magic?)」

Bassist Sally Kubota (The Scooters, ex-SOLEIL, ex-Les 5-4-3-2-1) has just turned 60 this summer, and his latest project is Sally Kubota Group, a trio that features Nakayama Tsutomu (The Scooters) on organ, Hara "Gen" Hideki on drums, and himself on bass. Their first release is this single that features Hirayama Miki who sings a cover of SOLEIL's "Do You Believe in Magic?", and for B-side a brand new song titled "Paris A GoGo" sung by Niigata-based idol group RYUTist. A download code is included. The artwork is also of course by Sally Kubota (also a graphic designer). Also out digitally at the same time.

A 2nd single will follow on December 2, featuring Nomiya Maki singing Pizzicato Five's "Twiggy Twiggy", and MANON singing "Le Canon de Manon" (a cover in French of SOLEIL's "Soleil's Kanon").

Three Berry Icecream "The Selection of Three Berry Icecream" (12")

Three Berry Icecream (Twitter), the solo unit of Ikemizu Mayumi (ex-Bridge), has a first ever vinyl LP being released. Included are best songs from her repertory of a bit over 20 years of solo activity. Buying it via Blue-Very Label's record shop Disques Blue-very or its Bandcamp might get you a limited bonus mini-zine and CD-R (while supplies last, it says only 25 are left at time of writing).

The song "Just A Dream" can be heard on Tokyo's Coolest Sound's radio show vol.10.
