Tokyo's Coolest Sound

Trauma techno-pop band Urbangarde has just released a new album, titled "Avantdemic". This is their 10th album, actually their 2nd this year following the release of "TOKYOPOP" on New Year's Day. It's full of brand new songs including an upgraded version of "Mask Delic". Check out the three music videos below!

The deluxe edition includes a bonus DVD which contains 90 minutes of their latest online show "Utsu FES 2020" plus some music videos, and also a special booklet that contains a novel (in Japanese) written by leader Matsunaga Temma.

Bassist Sally Kubota (The Scooters, ex-SOLEIL, Les 5-4-3-2-1) has just turned 60 this summer, and his latest project is Sally Kubota Group, a trio that features Nakayama Tsutomu (The Scooters) on organ, Hara "Gen" Hideki on drums, and himself on bass. They are releasing two consecutive singles, and the first — "Do You Believe In Magic?" (, Spotify, YouTube Music) — was released on November 3 featuring collaborations with Hirayama Miki and RYUTist.

This second single features Nomiya Maki on the A-side with a brand new arrangement of "Twiggy Twiggy", a song that first appeared on her first album "Pink no kokoro" (1981) and was later covered by Pizzicato Five. The B-side is a cover of "Soleil's Kanon" (from SOLEIL's album "Lollipop Sixteen"), this time sung in French by teenage singer/model MANON (Instagram) in a dub arrangement very different from the original. The artwork is by Sally Kubota A download code is included, and the single should be released digitally like the previous.

Electro-pop idol my♪Rabbits has just released a new single which is written by Imai Kentaro (The Aprils, CTO LAB.) and arranged by The Aprils!

The A-side "Hyper Girl" (or in Japanese "High Tension Girl") is a newly written song, for which the music video has been directed by The Aprils' Nakama Norihisa (also of DISCOMPO), while the B-side is a cover of The Aprils' "SHINE×SHINE×SHINE×SHINE" (from album "Back To The Future Music"). 1. Takeshi Nakatsuka "parkour" (2016)
(Japanese title: 中塚武 「parkour」)

The show starts with an addicting jazzy track titled "parkour" by Takeshi Nakatsuka (Qypthone), from his latest album "EYE" (Spotify, (Japan)). Crazy measures as catchy as can be!

Takeshi's most recent work is a tribute song to Pac-Man, released as part of the Pac-Man 40th Anniversary Album "Join The Pac" (Spotify, , YouTube Music).

2. ○△□ (Marusankakushikaku) "Hoshi Ga Furu" (2020)
(Japanese title: ○△□ 「星が降る」)

○△⬜︎ (read "Maru-sankaku-shikaku") is a piano trio led by singer-songwriter Mira Parameter with bassist Mutō Masataka (of band Cherry's) and drummer Yu-ki Nakamura, and also featuring violinist Akie Doi. The follow-up to Mira Parameter's album "Reborn" (2017) and single "Phantasmagoria" (2019, Spotify, ), this album as ○△⬜︎ titled "Hoshi Ga Furu" (Spotify, ) came as a pleasant surprise last spring. Included are some new versions of songs from "Reborn" rearranged in a jazzy style, and also several brand new songs such as this title track.

3. HALLCA "guilty pleasure" (2018)

This song is from HALLCA's first album "Villa" (2019) (Spotify, ).

Aside from HALLCA's latest new songs "Twisted Rainbow" and "Pink Medicine" released in April (Spotify, , YouTube Music), this year has been marked by many collaborations for the singer-songwriter, such as ones withAmamiyaMaako ("Floating Trip"), kiarayui ("Strawberry Moon"), Tsudio Studio ("Promise of Summer"), yuca ("Catch your night") and waiai ("Palm & Radio").

HALLCA performs live on YouTube every Sunday at 21:00 (Japan time), performing her own songs and covers from home (the latest is here). Subscribe to her channel to stay tuned every week. HALLCA has just recently done a live show backed by a full band, which has been released for download (details in Japanese here).

4. conte "Kisetsu Wo Nerae" (2020)
(Japanese title: conte 「季節を狙え」)

conte is a pop band formed of Yōsuke Kurosawa, Nozomu Satō and Shin Rizumu. Two of the members had been active for a while as Orangeade, but changed their name to conte as they welcomed new member Shin Rizumu. "Kisetsu Wo Nerae" (Spotify, ) is their first single under the new name.

5. Mukaju Dan "Girls Band in Times Square" (2020)
(Japanese title: 無果汁団 Mukajū Dan 「タイムズスクエアのガールズバンド」 "Times Square no Girls Band")

Mukaju Dan is a production unit formed of arranger Shock Taro and composer Ton-chan. The two had also been active before as blue marble, and Shock Taro has also been heard playing keyboards for Frenesi live and in recordings. Mukaju Dan's first album "Madoromu" (Spotify, , YouTube Music) has just been released in August, and features guest singer Misaki. Check out the music video for this song below.

Mukaju Dan has also produced voice actress Inoue Honoka's mini-album "First Flight" of which a song can be heard in episode vol.2 of this radio show.

6. Fujin Club "The Gold Rush" (2020)
(Japanese title: 婦人倶楽部 「君にやわらぎ」 "kimi ni yawaragi")

Fujin Club is a conceptual unit formed of housewives who live on Sado Island, off the coast of Niigata prefecture. In their songs they sing the daily life and history of their beloved island. The group has an amount of mysteriousness as the singers never reveal their faces. The song "The Gold Rush" (Spotify, , YouTube Music) is their brand new single released digitally earlier in November.

The music of this pop unit with a twist is produced by M. Lemon, aka Nozomu Satō (of conte heard earlier in the show). Nozomu Satō also recently started a solo project named plantar — releasing the song "Moon Flower" in a collaboration with Maika Loubté (Bandcamp, Spotify, , YouTube Music), and then another titled "Plant Ethics" (Spotify, , YouTube). He also produces girl duo Madame Croissant — which just released its 2nd 7" single titled "Lyrical Dance / A.S.C." (Spotify, , YouTube Music) — plus he's a member of unit caméra-stylo.

7. Genius "This is not new." (2016)
(Japanese title: ジーニアス 「This is not new.」)

Genius is a group active since 1997, doing distinctive live performances which combine singing and dancing, with a musical-like feel. The unit's leader Taichi Asahi is an active choreographer (making dance moves for Bed In among many others), and he's also part of fun chiptune unit Virtualboys (SoundCloud) which you've heard in previous episodes of this radio show (vol.4 and vol.2). The song "This is not new." is from Genius' album of the same name.

Despite Genius' music not being widely available online, some performances can be seen on YouTube and some songs heard on SoundCloud.

8. Neil and Iraiza "supreme day" (2000)

Here's an old favorite by Neil and Iraiza! "supreme day" was first released on EP "Wasted Time" (2000) and a bit later it was included on album "New School" (2002). The duo formed of Gakuji "Chabe" Matsuda (now of Learners, and also known as cubismo grafico) and Hirohisa Horie (The Cornelius Group) has released not long ago an album titled "Timeless Melodies" (Spotify, ), also available on 10" vinyl.

9. Akane Hosaka "Non disposition" (2004)
(Japanese title: アカネホサカ 「Non disposition」)

Akane Hosaka (SoundCloud) is an electronic artist who has for many years used Moog, Stylophone and various other toy instruments and even toys for making her music. This song is from her first album "Electric for small drop channel", released only on CD-R. The artist has been updating her YouTube channel recently, starting with a performance she did for an online festival a few months ago (watch it below!) and also some older songs such as this one.

Her latest release is an EP titled "Loop Music" (available for free download at Bandcamp) for which she has been using a minimal set of a Korg MS-20 Mini and loop pedal. Her SoundCloud is also full of more of those! Her 4th album "pikkonoco" can also be found at Tokyo Recohan.

10. Yucca "echo" (2012)

Yucca is an alternative indie-pop band that's been around since 2003. I always enjoy their sounds every time I stumble upon them again.

Since album "our journey (to anywhere we want)" (2012) — which includes the song "echo" — they have released a few singles. I believe that pretty much all of their music is available on Bandcamp.

11. nimit & co. "Bask" (2018)

nimit & co. is the recent bedroom pop unit of Kunimi Tomoko (Twitter), who is best known as a trumpeter in the groovy collective Wack Wack Rhythm Band (which released this year a brand new album titled "The 'Now' Sounds"). In nimit & co., she finds new directions with lots of synths and a very cool post-rock kind of feel! So far only two songs have been released, as a split-cassette with BANK. Check out the music video for "Bask" below.

This song is also featured on "new generation Shibuya-kei" compilation "Magical Connection 2020" compiled by Sally Kubota, which was just released this week (and only available on CD). Highly recommended!

12. Francis "DELAWARE" (2016)

Francis is the solo project of bassist Makoto Ori (who was previously in The Collectors, and has also played in Original Love). "Delaware" is a song that was released so far only on CD-R in 2016, "2016 Summer EP". It is available on Bandcamp along with several other releases (some of which are in collaboration with new wave gyaru icon Haruko Tajima).

Francis is said to be working on a brand new album which I can't wait for!

13. Ryomei Shirai "Of 8 Minutes 7" (2017)

Ryōmei Shirai is the lead guitarist of Japan's 1975-founded band Moonriders. The song "Of 8 Minutes 7" appears on his solo album "For Instance" (2017) (CDJapan, Amazon) which celebrated his 45th anniversary of becoming a pro musician, and the 40th anniversary of him joining Moonriders.

Since then, his band's name became for instance, and they just released a brand new album last month titled "door that wind" (Spotify, ). Check it out!

This is a compilation of new generation Shibuya-kei, compiled and supervised by Sally Kubota (The Scooters, ex-SOLEIL, les 5-4-3-2-1, The Phantom Gift). Featured are a few brand new recordings, including new SOLEIL covers by microstar (songwriters of "Baby Boo"), Tweedees (songwriters of "Le Coeur Qui Fuzz") and Kaede (Negicco), plus many songs of related or like-minded artists.

The opening song is by Sally Kubota and friends as Magical Connection Orchestra. Sally Kubota Group —a trio with organ player Nakayama Tsutomu (The Scooters) and drummer Hara "Gen" Hideki— also appears on the recently released song featuring RYUTist ("Paris A Go-Go"), and Kaede's cover of SOLEIL's debut single "Pinky Fluffy" (written by Takanami K-tarō). MANON (Instagram) has just suddenly released a brand new song titled "18". Produced by KM, with who she previously collaborated on the song "Air Kissing" (, Spotify), this time MANON writes the lyrics about being an 18-year-old. The music video was co-directed by MANON and ZOEY.

This song follows "World's End feat. dodo" (, Spotify) released in July. MANON will also soon be featured on a 7" by Sally Kubota Group to be released on December 2, on which she sings in French. Stay tuned for details!

Two Negicco vinyl releases are coming! The first is Negicco's latest EP "gozen 0ji no Sympathy" (, Spotify), of which the three songs will be released on 10", with new jacket artwork by manga artist Akase Yuriko. On the same day, Kaede's latest mini-album "Stardust in Blue" (, Spotify) will also be released as a 12" LP.

"gozen 0ji no Sympathy" features collaborations with hitomitoi & PARKGOLF (title song lyrics and music respectively), Okino Shuntarō (Venus Peter) and CRCK/LCKS. Kaede's "Stardust in Blue" is a collaboration with bands Lamp and UWANOSORA.

Negicco will hold a 4-hour online event on November 28 (viewable until December 6), backed by a horn section and keyboards, and with DJ sets by Megu and producer connie. Trackmaker XTAL's 2nd solo album, "Aburelu" (out digitally in May), has just been released on 10" vinyl! This comes from new label 813 Records.

The album explained in the artist's words:

"First of all, I don't use any rhythm instruments like drums or percussion. The length of each song is also reduced to a maximum of three minutes. The direction of the music was also focused on how I could go outside of my intentions, and how I could go outside of them, which I hadn't done before. The title 'Aburelu' means 'overflowing'. I aimed for music that would overflow to the outside of the demarcated grid. I hope you enjoy this new endeavor."

ZEUS, the new solo project of guitarist/keyboardist Okuda Kensuke (Nona Reeves), has just released another brand new song which is sung by hitomitoi! The new song has touches of techno-pop and city pop.

This follows two songs released in September, "Little Bit Better with Bonnie Pink" and "Horizon". A full-length album is expected to be released in spring 2021.

Based in Sado Island (off the coast of Niigata prefecture), the always charming yet mysterious housewives unit Fujin Club has just released a brand new song digitally. Titled "The Gold Rush" (or in Japanese, "kimi ni yawaragi"), it follows "Taiwan Tour" that was released in September.

As always it's produced by M. Lemon (aka Nozomu Satō/plantar, also of conte and Madame Croissant), and the song features Tsujibayashi Miho on chorus, Arai Ryosuke (of Tonari no Satie) on flute/piccolo, and Ōishi Shuntarō (of cinematomusica) on clarinet.

Ide Yasushi, of label Grand Gallery, has just released a new album which consists of one song of 36 minutes! Titled "Cosmic Suite", it's a collaboration with several musicians including Jeff Mills, Tanaka Tomoyuki (FPM), Yashiki Gōta and Watusi (Coldfeet), among others. The suite is a mix of music of various genres, from jazz to house, reggae, techno, and then some. Hear part of it below.

The release is now available on 12" and CD, either at the official Grand Gallery online shop (which includes a limited sticker, plus optionally an autograph (when using the "サイン入り" button)), or at the shops linked below.

Ryusenkei (project of Cunimondo Takiguchi) and hitomitoi have teamed up to produce the city pop-themed soundtrack of the currently ongoing NHK TV series "Talio". After releasing the song "kanashii kurai Diamond" digitally last month (Spotify, ), here comes the full album with all of the show's BGM plus a few other vocal songs, with two featuring Horigome Yasuyuki (ex-Kirinji). The artwork is by famous illustrator Hiroshi Nagai (Instagram).

The recording musicians are drummer Kitayama Yūko, bassist Matsuki "Makkin" Toshirō, guitarist Yamanouchi Toshio, keyboardist Hirahata Tetsuya, percussionist Hirano Eiji, and keyboardist Shiina Akiko.

"Talio" can be watched on NHK G every Friday from 22:00, repeated on Tuesday late night from 25:20. Just two more episodes to go.

Cunimondo Takiguchi, the leader of city pop band Ryusenkei (and also known as the producer of albums by hitomitoi and Natsu Summer), has selected this compilation of songs that have influenced him. While some are famous songs, others are rare or available on CD for the first time.

Kayō rock group Salome no Kuchibiru, who are about to disband after 18 years of history, are releasing two compilations of their favorite songs. Each contains 16 songs, selected respectively by leader Mizuno Satoshi and singer Tachibana Kyōko. Also be sure to check out their last original album "Religion" released in July.

Salome no Kuchibiru will play two very last shows on November 21 and 22 at Nishi-Eifuku JAM. Those can be watched online from anywhere. Find details here: November 21 and November 22. This is the first solo album of Hirose Aina (official Twitter), following a mini-album titled "Schedule of Afternoon Hours" (2018, Spotify, , YouTube Music). In addition to songs produced by city pop artist Seki Yoshihiko, there are songs written by Sokabe Keiichi (Sunny Day Service) ("hareta asa, jinsei no yokan"), Hase Yasuhiro (Yume to Cosme) ("nanda, tada no seishun ka"), and Aina herself ("17"). A cover of Harada Tomoyo's "Dandelion" is also included. Featured musicians are bassist Iga Wataru, drummer Kitayama Yuko, guitarist Yamanouchi Toshio and keyboardist Hase Yasuhiro (Yume to Cosme). The album was mixed by Satō Seiki (microstar).

Two songs from the album, "17" and "Travel In My Mind", have just been released on 7" for Record Day 2020. Find details here.

Piano-led jazz-rock instrumental trio fox capture plan has just released a brand new album! This is their 8th album, the follow-up to "Capturism" (2018). Included are the songs "yakan kōro" and "New Era", both first released digitally last year, as well as two songs heard in anime series "Stand My Heroes" and "Seishun Buta Yarō" (aka "Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai"). Following the release of Pac-Man tribute songs as three digital EPs earlier this year (vol.1, vol.2 & vol.3), here finally comes the awaited Pac-Man 40th anniversary album! Included are all of the tracks from those three EPs, plus songs by Towa Tei and Scha Dara Parr (first released digitally in 2010).

Bassist Sally Kubota (The Scooters, ex-SOLEIL, ex-Les 5-4-3-2-1) has just turned 60 this summer, and his latest project is Sally Kubota Group, a trio that features Nakayama Tsutomu (The Scooters) on organ, Hara "Gen" Hideki on drums, and himself on bass. Their first release is this single that features Hirayama Miki who sings a cover of SOLEIL's "Do You Believe in Magic?", and for B-side a brand new song titled "Paris A GoGo" sung by Niigata-based idol group RYUTist. A download code is included. The artwork is also of course by Sally Kubota (also a graphic designer). Also out digitally at the same time.

A 2nd single will follow on December 2, featuring Nomiya Maki singing Pizzicato Five's "Twiggy Twiggy", and MANON singing "Le Canon de Manon" (a cover in French of SOLEIL's "Soleil's Kanon").
