Tokyo's Coolest Sound

This is the 3rd of the monthly "Readymade mirai no ongaku" (aka "Readymade Oldays") series of twelve 7"'s of songs selected by Konishi Yasuharu, in which he shares all-time classics from his DJ sets. (Find all details in the first post.)

Once again two songs that are available on 7" for the first time. The Sunrays' "Have To Be Myself" appeared on the band's only album "Andrea" in 1966, while The Turtles' "Too Young To Be One" was first released in 1967 on "Happy Together".

Nosa Reina has a new song out now digitally! She has also announced that it's from her upcoming album "Sports and Distractions" (Japanese title "Sports to kibarashi") to be released in 2020. Reina can be heard playing ukulele (as she does almost daily on Instagram), and on chorus is Itō Eriko (who used to sing chorus in Pizzicato Five).

Reina will be part of a free Christmas concert with Tawoyame Special Combo (of Tawoyame Orquesta) to be held on December 25 at Roppongi Hills' Arena area. The show starts at 5pm. Find details here.

Black Friday isn't all that big in Japan, but we do get two releases for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019!

The first release is song "Energy Flo", a self-cover of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "energy flow" in a collaboration with tabla player U-zhaan and rappers Kakato (Tamaki Roy x Chinza Dopeness). The B-side is a different instrumental version by Sakamoto and U-zhaan, previously released only digitally.

The other release is by rapper Robochu, of original track "Near by Town" previously released on CD-R. The B-side is what looks like a new remix by guitarist Kashif.

Ryuichi Sakamoto feat. U-zhaan "energy flow - rework"

This is Konishi Yasuharu's latest project! A modern take on 1969-released album "Enraku no Playboy kōza 12 shō", a 12-chapter narrative course for becoming a playboy with perfect lounge music BGM (then performed by pianist Maeda Norio & His Playboys), this time Konishi and his own playboys make a soundtrack to accompany tales told by Inoue Jun (ex-The Spiders). Each of the tracks corresponds to a month of the year, and has in its title a place in Tokyo, a girl's name, and a meal.

The music includes two songs originally by Pizzicato Five ("1 janvier" and "Tokyo wa yoru no 7ji (the night is still young)") and also several well known standards and movie themes. The main performances are by jazz guitarist Tanabe Mitsukuni, and the texts were written by Samuzora Hadaka. Oh, and the cover girl is Junon of CyberJapan Dancers.

The album comes in CD and LP editions (the LP a few weeks later), with the CD containing bonus instrumentals, and the LP in a gatefold jacket that should live up to the album's sexy theme.

Self-produced singer-songwriter and "neo electro-pop girl" Emiri Kanou has finally a full-length album being released! This follows the excellent singles "gomen ne" (7"), "Friday Night" and "1988", all released this year. The lead tracks from those singles are included, as well as more favorites that had been heard in her live shows, and also a few brand new songs!

The album comes in four editions, a limited edition CD that contains a bonus remix CD (with remixes by Yoshida Tetsuto, Tentenko, Satō Yūsuke and more), a regular edition of the main CD only, and there will also be LP and cassette tape editions (which both unfortunately got delayed of a month because of manufacture delays).

A release party solo show will be held on Saturday December 14 at Moon Romantic in Gaienmae. Meanwhile there will also be a show of Emiri's "Autumn Family Concert" series on Sunday November 17 at Shimokitazawa Three from noon (tickets), together with Satō Yūsuke Ultra-Vioence.

80KIDZ has a new song out now digitally, and it features singer Na of Thai synth-pop band Polycat (Facebook)! Check it out below. This collaboration came to shape because Polycat sent in 2017 a copy of their Japanese-sung album "Doyobi no terebi" to 80KIDZ, since when they had kept in touch.

Scha Dara Parr has a new track out today on download/streaming platforms! Ending theme of TV anime series "Four Cards" (English title apparently "Four of a Kind"), the track takes inspiration from the number "four" by inviting two more MCs: Robochu (Instagram) and Kaseki Cider. Eclectic 20-year-old singer-songwriter Hasegawa Hakushi (Soundcloud) has a first full-length album being released! This is his 2nd CD release and follows mini-album "sōmoku hōdō" (2018) (which contained a cover of YMO's "Cue"). Included is a self-cover of "itsukushii hibi", a song he wrote for Himeno Tama. Three songs are available in advance on iTunes and Spotify.

HMV and Tower Records, and also Disk Union, give away a bonus promo CD-R (while supplies last). One of the three tracks is different in each edition.

A free in-store event will be held on November 29 at Fred Perry Shop Tokyo in Harajuku. The event space opens from 18:30 and the show starts at 19:00. The event will also feature Kan Sano.

Ozawa Kenji (ex-Flipper's Guitar) has a brand new album about to be released! A new video for "Like a Comet" has just been posted, in which he plays cards with his eldest son. A drone was used for shooting the video. Watch it below!

Omodaka, the chiptune-meets-minyō solo project of Sōichi Terada (also well known for his house music and DJing), has a 3rd full-length album out now! Always with vocals by enka/minyō singer Kanazawa Akiko, this is the follow-up to album "Bridge Song (2014) and collects recent works of the 5 years since. Remixes by YMCK, Shinichirō Yokota and Jaemulk Manhattan are also included.

Towa Tei is celebrating the 25th anniversary since his solo debut (album "Future Listening!" released in October 1994). Idol duo WHY@DOLL, who has announced in July that they will be ending their activities because of a member's health condition, is releasing a final album. Along with a selection of their best songs are some new mixes, a new recording of early song "Magic Motion No.5", the previously unreleased "Blue Summer", and brand new song "album" (written and co-arranged by Yoshida Tetsuto), plus a live version of latest single "futari de ikite yukereba" (a performanced at a show at Shibuya Glad last July).

While near half of the songs were written by Yoshida Tetsuto (most of those co-arranged by Hase Yasuhiro (Yume to Cosme)), there are also ones contributed by Nakatsuka Takeshi, Onigawara, and members of Awesome City Club and Cicada, etc.

In and around Tokyo, WHY@DOLL can be caught at the following in-store events: on November 4 from 13:30 at Tower Records Shinjuku (7F), then at 18:00 at Tower Records Kinshicho, on November 6 from 19:00 at Tower Records Yokohama Vivre, and on November 7 from 20:30 at Tower Records Shibuya (5F). The final release of Negicco's vinyl re-issue project is their first full-length album, first released on CD in 2012 and bringing together 18 of their best songs since their 2003 debut. To fit everything, it needed to be made into a two 12" set.
