Tokyo's Coolest Sound

Having debuted with "Let's Get Together Again" in 2012 (on Kyoto label Second Royal), here's the 2nd album from Tokyo-based 3-piece band Teen Runnings. This one is being released on Sauna Cool, label that popped up at the end of last year with 51-track compilation "Sauna Cool 1".

"Now" has all tracks mixed by Harvard's Ueda Yasufumi. The cover artwork was done by Nagai Hiroshi, famous for his artworks for Ohtake Eiichi. All songs can be sampled at Amazon.

An event with Kaji Hideki will be held at Astro Hall in Harajuku on August 22. Details at Tokyo Gig Guide.

"Happy & Sad" (short version)

ryō fukawa (aka Rocketman) has a new album out this week, his second release under his real name. This album features guest singers Mizuno Mari (paris match) and Cana (Sotte Bosse) among others, with a cover of "love theme from Spartacus" and an upbeat remix of Pachelbel's "Canon In D" (yes, that "Canon").

In January this year, Takahashi Yukihiro (YMO) formed a super-group under the name Takahashi Yukihiro & Metafive, also featuring Oyamada Keigo (Cornelius), Towa Tei, Sunahara Yoshinori, Gondō Tomohiko (anonymass, pupa) and Leo Imai. The concert they played at Ex Theater Roppongi is now being released on CD.

Also last year, a tour was held the name Takahashi Yukihiro with In Phase, this time with a band featuring James Iha, Takakuwa Kei (Curly Giraffe), Horie Hirohisa (Neil & Iraiza) and Gondō Tomohiko. This one is being released as a deluxe limited pressing that comes with DVD and Blu-ray discs (both formats!) and a 2-CD set of the show's audio.

Both of these special bands were thought to be one-time opportunities, but they can fortunately be seen again live at the World Happiness festival on August 10. Not to be missed!

Here comes a brand new original album by Buffalo Daughter, follow-up to "The Weapons of Math Destruction" (2010). The new album has a theme of "block party" and comes as a set of 2 CDs, one of the original new songs, and the other of remixes of those new songs. Original songs feature guests such as Kahimi Karie, Sakamoto Shintarō (ex-Yura Yura Teikoku), French rapper Fuzati (Klub des Loosers), and Pismo. Remixers include Sunahara Yoshinori, Cibo Matto, Nagai Seiichi (sōtaiseiriron), Charlotte Kemp Muhl (of Sean Lennon's band The GOASTT) and more.

The album's iTunes edition comes with an exclusive bonus track, "Oy Oy Oy". A remix of the track by electro unit Funwari-chan can be heard on SoundCloud.

Buffalo Daughter can be seen live next weekend at the Fuji Rock Festival (3rd day evening at the Red Marquee stage).

Negicco's new single is written and produced by Tajima Takao (Original Love)! Its B-side is also a Shibuya-kei-sounding track by Negicco's regular producer connie.

The single comes in 3 different limited editions, two of which each include a DVD of one of the music videos. The 3rd comes with a bonus remix CD with remixes by Dorian and Avec Avec (Sugar's Campaign). There's also a one-CD regular edition, and a limited 7" pressing. Johnny's long-running boy idol group SMAP has a new double-A-side single of interest coming this week. "Top Of The World" is written by guitarist Miyavi with lyrics by Ishiwatari Junji (ex-Supercar), and the track was arranged by CMJK (early Denki Groove). The B-side is written and produced by Nakata Yasutaka (CAPSULE).

Two limited editions each contain a DVD of the music video of one of the songs. There's also a CD-only regular edition.

COR!S is a young electro singer-songwriter from Osaka who has the skills to entirely self-produce her music down to mastering (formula that reminds of Nakata Yasutaka). She has previously produced tracks for Yun*chi (among others) and remixes for mishmash*Julie Watai (see "The Second Album"), and has been featured on a song by London artist bo en (listen here).

So here comes COR!S' debut mini-album, recently released on iTunes worldwide. Included are 6 original tracks, and remixes by AZUpubshool (SoundCloud) and Miura Kō. All tracks can be sampled below.

A special event will be held on Saturday July 19 at Strobe Café in Kitasando (Tokyo). The event is free (with a free drink included), though a reservation through Peatix is needed.

Here's a wave of releases from Crazy Ken Band!

First, new single "Spark da!" which is being used as NHK's "minna no uta" for June and July. Included are 3 B-sides of new songs used in TV and radio commercials. The limited edition comes with a DVD of the video clip and making-of footage.

Second is a 2-CD compilation of the "Free Soul" series, selected by Hashimoto Tōru (Café Après-Midi) under themes such as "urban breeze", "summer drive" and "electric piano".

And third is a live DVD of a show held on November 14, 2013 at the Kanagawa Kenmin Hall, part of the "Crazy Ken Band Tour Flying Saucer". The show's encore is said to feature an orchestra for three songs.

A Japan tour will be held from September to November, stopping by Nakano SunPlaza (Tokyo) on October 25 and 26. Find all tour dates and info here.

"Spark da!"

Emerson Kitamura is an organ/keyboard player who can often be seen on stage playing in support of other artists. Lately he's also a regular member of The Scooters since their comeback in 2012.

Not sticking to a particular genre, this first full-length mostly instrumental solo album is entirely played, produced and mixed by the versatile musician. All songs are original except for two covers, "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" (from "My Fair Lady") and Kilburn & the High Roads' "The Call-Up".

Idol rap unit lyrical school has a new party summer track produced by tofubeats, who has been involved since their early tengal6 days. The single's limited edition comes with two bonus remixes, by okadada (SoundCloud) and ALI-KICK.

lyrical school have a busy schedule for the rest of the month, during which they can be caught at many in-store events promoting the release. On release day July 15 (and also two days later on July 17) they will play outside Marui City in Shibuya from 19:00.

"FRESH!!!"

Do you remember POiSON GiRL FRiEND (Facebook page)? Solo unit of nOrikO, its name took inspiration from Momus who later produced two of her albums ("Shyness" and "Mr. Polyglot Remix"). 20 years have passed since "Love Me" (1994) and now she's back with a brand new album featuring many collaborations with various producers. She still embraces dance and electro sounds with roots from the 90's, which feel nostalgic but also very fresh. Half of the tracks are original, while the rest are covers of Erasure, The Doors, Serge Gainsbourg and New Order.

Sampler clip

After 7" singles being released every month, here finally comes a full-length album from Hoshino Michiru. The whole is again produced by Hase Hajimu and Satō Seiki (Microstar), which promises a groovy pop journey with touches of spacey synths. Four of the songs here are previously unreleased, while the rest were released earlier on 7" only.

A limited 12" vinyl edition of the album has also been released, a week ahead of the CD.

Charan-Po-Rantan is a unit formed of two sisters, singer Momo and accordionist/songwriter Koharu. Together they create a circus-like world from another time and place. They have been around since 2009 and released several albums already, though this mini-album is their major debut. Included are 3 original songs, and a cover of "su-dara bushi" (1961, Hajime Hana & The Crazy Cats).

The limited edition includes a DVD of the title song's music video and a "profile movie". HMV gives away a promo sticker with either edition.
